A Colorful Summer Wedding at the Payson Utah Temple
There is something so beautiful about a summer wedding at the Payson Utah Temple. Between the temple's architecture, the gorgeous grounds, and the mountains surrounding Payson, it creates such a timeless setting for wedding photos.
This Payson Utah Temple wedding was especially beautiful. The couple exited the temple in the afternoon to a huge group of family and friends ready to celebrate them. We spent the next part of the day taking the big group photo, family pictures, bridal party photos, and of course plenty of portraits of the newlyweds around the temple grounds.
The weather gave us a little bit of everything. We had sunshine, clouds, and plenty of wind, which ended up creating some of my favorite movement in their photos. Between her veil, the colorful florals, and their huge bridal party, there was so much personality throughout the entire day.

A Payson Utah Temple Exit
One of my favorite parts of photographing temple weddings is the exit. There is so much anticipation while everyone waits outside, and then suddenly the doors open and the couple walks out as newlyweds.
For this wedding, their temple exit happened in the afternoon with all of their closest family and friends waiting outside to celebrate them.
Right after the exit, we gathered everyone together for one large group photo. I love doing this early because everyone is already in one place and excited to celebrate. It gives the couple a photo with all of the people who came to support them without having to track everyone down later in the day.
For couples planning a wedding at the Payson Utah Temple, I always recommend talking with your photographer beforehand about how you want to organize your temple photos. Having a plan makes family pictures and group photos go so much faster, which means more time for the fun stuff.
Family Photos at the Payson Utah Temple
After the big group photo, we moved into family pictures.
Temple weddings can involve some pretty large families, so having an organized family photo list beforehand makes such a difference. We were able to move through each combination while everyone was already gathered outside the temple.
I always try to make this portion of the day efficient while still making sure the couple gets the important photographs they'll want years from now.
The Payson Utah Temple also gives us several beautiful areas to work with, so family photos can have the temple in the background while still keeping everyone as the focus of the image.
A Big and Colorful Bridal Party
This bridal party was SO much fun to photograph.
They had a large group of bridesmaids and groomsmen, and the mix of colors was beautiful. Instead of everything being one exact shade, the different colors worked together and gave the entire wedding such a fun and elevated summer feel.
I love when couples aren't afraid to incorporate color into their wedding day. Against the lighter tones of the Payson Utah Temple and the greenery around the grounds, all of those colors photographed beautifully.
And with a big bridal party, there is always so much energy. We captured the classic group portraits, but I also love giving everyone a chance to loosen up and get photos that actually show the personalities and friendships within the group.
Bride and Groom Portraits Around the Temple
Once we finished the group, family, and bridal party photos, we were able to slow things down for portraits of just the two of them.
This is always one of my favorite parts of a temple wedding day.
After being surrounded by family and friends, the couple finally gets a few minutes together. We walked around the Payson Utah Temple grounds and used the different architecture, landscaping, and views to create a variety of portraits without needing to leave the property.
The changing weather made their photos even more interesting. We had moments of bright sunshine followed by softer cloudy light, and the wind brought so much movement into her dress and veil.
Wind can sometimes make couples nervous before photos, but it can actually photograph beautifully. Instead of fighting it the entire time, we used it to create movement and some of my favorite images from the day.
All the Little Wedding Details
One of the reasons I love photographing an entire wedding story instead of only focusing on the big moments is because there are so many little details couples spend months choosing.
The flowers, colors, dress, rings, invitations, shoes, and all of the personal touches are part of what makes one wedding completely different from another.
This wedding was full of beautiful details, especially the mix of colors throughout the day. Everything worked together without feeling too perfectly matched, which gave the wedding so much personality.
Those details may feel small while you're planning, but they're such a fun part of looking back at your wedding gallery later.
A Backyard Wedding Reception
After the temple, the celebration continued with a backyard wedding reception.
I have photographed quite a few backyard weddings throughout Utah, and I genuinely love them. There is something incredibly personal about celebrating in a space connected to the couple or their family.
Backyard receptions can also give couples so much freedom to make the evening their own. You aren't necessarily working within the same rules or layout as a traditional reception venue, so you can create a celebration that fits your guest list and personality.
After the more structured portion of photos at the temple, the backyard reception gave everyone a chance to relax, visit, and celebrate together.
It was such a beautiful way to finish the day.
Planning Photos for a Payson Utah Temple Wedding
If you're planning to get married at the Payson Utah Temple, one of my biggest recommendations is to have a photography plan before your wedding day.
Temple exits can move quickly, especially when you have a large group waiting outside. Knowing the order of your photos beforehand makes everything much easier.
For many temple weddings, I recommend an order similar to this:
- Temple exit
- Large group photo
- Immediate and extended family photos
- Bridal party photos
- Bride and groom portraits
This lets the largest groups leave first while we gradually work down to just the couple. It also means your family and bridal party aren't standing around waiting while we take couple portraits.
And don't stress too much about the weather. Utah can give you sunshine, clouds, and wind all within the same afternoon. A photographer who is comfortable working in changing light can use each condition differently and still create a beautiful, consistent gallery.
